Diabetes UK has worked with RNID to produce information in British Sign Language (BSL) for the people with diabetes in the Deaf community.

Clare Chilton (previously a presenter for the BBCs See Hear) has kindly helped to sign on the videos – Understanding diabetes and the Diabetes and the body animation.

Research was undertaken in Austria in 2002 which showed that at least 14% of Deaf people have diabetes.

For Diabetes UK, this has been a long-awaited resource. People with diabetes who are Deaf are more at risk of facing health inequalities to accessing care and are less likely to find accessible information to help better manage their diabetes.

We hope with the information produced, people who are deaf and have diabetes now have information that meets their needs appropriately.
