The Hearing Impaired Unit serves the Blaenau Gwent, Monmouth, Newport and Torfaen unitary authorities and welcomes students who have a hearing impairment that results in them having a Statement of their special educational needs. Some students may have a special educational need in addition to their hearing loss. The students have varying degrees of hearing loss, they may be oral communicators, use sign language or use a combination of sign and speech. Students are taught by teachers of the deaf in the resource base and supported in mainstream lessons by sign support assistants. The percentage of integration into mainstream lessons is determined by individual needs.
Students are given the opportunity to attend weekly swimming sessions and weekly sports sessions (delivered by a member of the Welsh deaf rugby team).
A speech and language therapist visits the unit weekly and a British Sign Language tutor delivers timetabled BSL lessons.
The unit has a drama group and a signing choir and puts on an annual concert for friends and families.
The students benefit from close links with schools for the deaf in Bristol and Exeter and a hearing impaired unit in St. Cyres School Penarth.
