Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education is a specialist residential and day school and college. We enable our students to fulfil their potential by guiding them as they develop socially and emotionally, acquire language and communication skills, achieve independence and excel educationally.

We believe that Deaf people should be valued by themselves and their society, being confident, well educated, independent, able to communicate and with good and appropriate employment and housing.

All our students are supported by a wide range of professionals who work at the Academy, including qualified teaching assistants, communication support workers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, educational audiologists, BSL instructors, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists and counsellors.

Teaching programmes are tailored to each student with a focus on experiential learning and relevance. Students learn in a bilingual BSL and English environment, with additional communication tools, such as cued English, being used where appropriate.

Our Sixth Form and FE College offers a full range of academic, vocational and foundation learning courses, depending on students needs and aspirations.

As well as gaining a bespoke education, students at Exeter Deaf Academy also take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including a dynamic School and College Student Council, swimming in our on-site pool, football and trips to local attractions. We also welcome a wide-range of organisations to run workshops at the Academy, such as Dartmoor Zoo.

Being part of a supportive peer group helps our students develop self-confidence and a real sense of belonging, which provides them with the tools to develop their own Deaf voice and identity, preparing them for their life ahead.
