The Unit accepts children with various degrees of hearing loss and uses an auditory oral approach to communication. They can be admitted from the age of 3 and stay until secondary transfer.
We believe that deafness should not be an obstacle to achieving a pupils maximum potential if the right support is in place.
Within the unit there is a high level of specialist teaching in small groups from Teachers of the Deaf and close attention is paid to developing and enhancing listening skills. This is achieved through teaching in acoustically treated classrooms and an emphasis on spoken English within a quiet listening environment. The children wear radio aids which help to overcome the effects of background noise. Our Teachers of the Deaf work closely with mainstream teachers following the National Curriculum in order to plan a broad and balanced curriculum.
The proportion of time children join in their mainstream classes is decided on an individual basis according to each childs needs. The unit is very much fully included in the life of the school.
We have close links with the hospitals to ensure that the childrens hearing aids and cochlear implants are performing to the best of their ability.
There are 3 Speech and Language Therapists on site who work with the class teacher to set appropriate targets for the children. They work with the children on both an individual and small group basis every week. The speech and language therapists also welcome parental involvement in their childs therapy.
