Hammersmith and Fulham Adult College provide Communication Support Workers for Deaf Students where needed. Please contact college for further information. Support is provided on an individual basis, the college is equipped with hearing loops and put in place many strategies to help support deaf people.

Lip reading
The 10 week Lipreading course includes:
• Systematic practice, the study of the visual clues to speech;
• Explanation of common mistakes and confusions;
• Development of other skills needed for lipreading e.g. concentration,
observation, mental agility, awareness of rhythm, situation context etc;
• Appreciation of the importance of rhythm, context and other visual clues;
• Awareness and development of own communication skills, particularly in
relation to other hearing impaired people;
• Information on topics of interest.
A variety of teaching methods will be used in each session including structured exercises, drills, quizzes and practical work. Students will practice lipreading each other in pairs or small groups. Information may be shared by means of handouts, demonstrations, discussions or invited speakers.
This Lipreading course will cover the theory and practice of lipreading and is intended for those students whose hearing has become impaired after they have acquired language and are proficient in spoken English.
This preparatory course is suitable for those who: want to learn basic language skills to communicate simple conversations with deaf people want to learn new language skills as part of a programme of study want to progress to more advanced study and/or employment using BSL in the future are studying for personal development are parents, family, friends or colleagues of deaf people.
This course is designed for hearing people but welcomes those who are deaf or hard of hearing. The course is open to all, whether they wish to study towards the examination or just attend to improve their language skills.
Experience of the deaf world would be an advantage, but no special knowledge is needed.
Above all, you will need commitment to benefit from this course, and be willing to practice
between classes.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to: understand and use a range of simple
words and sentences in BSL; take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL give and
follow simple directions or instructions in BSL give and follow simple familiar statements or
descriptions in BSL.
