Special Support Centre for Hearing Impaired students
Hazelwick caters for students 11-19. It is one of only two secondary schools in West Sussex with a Special Support Centre. Hazelwick is an inclusive school whose vision is ‘for each and every student to achieve their maximum potential’.
Students are fully integrated in the mainstream classroom. They are part of a form group within the Pastoral System and participate in mainstream classes with communication assistant support. In addition to this they may have withdrawal with a Teacher of the Deaf or a communication assistant. The level of in-class support and withdrawal is assessed on entry in discussion with parents and Primary setting and is reviewed at least annually. In addition to this students may access a variety of small group interventions led by specialist teachers or learning support assistants.
Hazelwick SSC has a Teacher of the Deaf and a dedicated team of specialist assistants who can support students through oral communication, signed English or BSL. All specialist communication assistants have at least BSL level 2.
Applications for a place must be made through the Special Needs Team at West Sussex County Council.
