Deaf and Hearing Impaired Specialist Support
To identify and agree any support needs, Deaf/Hearing Impaired students will be invited to an assessment meeting with the Hearing Impairment Specialist. This meeting may take place before the start of the course so that any support needs can be discussed, agreed and in place from the first day.
The Deaf and Hearing Impairment Specialist Team can offer the following support:
Initial assessment and reviews with the Hearing Impairment Specialist.
Communication Support Worker to interpret the lecture in sigh language and relay student, tutor and peer discussions.
Educational Support Worker for clarification etc. in class.
Note-takers.
Liaison and raising awareness about student needs with tutors.
Equipment loans of portable loops, vibrating fire pagers and digital voice recorders.
Exam access arrangements eg extra time, modified exam papers.
Tinnitus sound therapy support.
Material adaptation such as modified language and vocabulary.
Individual specialist support.
Strategies agreed with the student to encourage and support independence.
Help with progression to any other College course, university or employment.
